I pulled out a 1984 Homemaking booklet from Relief Society tonight.
I had this crazy need for a fruit smoothie but was both too lazy to run to the nearest Jamba Juice and I lacked frozen fruit.
But then I remembered. Before I moved, my mom gave me her book that I liked as a child. It was a Homemaking book with all sorts of useful information, including 2 amazing recipes I loved to make as a child. (I thought they were amazing when I was little) The first was something called Hootenanny, which most of us would recognize as German pancakes; and the second, Orange Julius-The cure for my fruit smoothie craving. But let me tell you, I got more tonight than an Orange Julius. This book is a pure gem.
So ladies...please DO get excited. Because over the next several days, weeks, months. . . however long it takes. I am going to share with you tidbits of information, things you'll want to know, things you will love learning about. The purpose of Homemaking in 1984 was to teach how to be a better homemaker. (I am not making fun.) This is good info.
Here goes the first tidbit. Since it is summer, and so many of us travel during the summer, I will start with:
Packing Tips from the Experts
1. The lighter you travel the better the trip.
2. Do not pack too loosely or the clothes will slide around. Choose the right size suitcase for the amount you want to take, and fill it to the top.
3. Before packing be sure that nothing needs mending or cleaning.
4. Distribute the weight in your bag as evenly as possible for easy carrying.
5. Do not overload the suitcase. If you have to sit on it to close it, it is too full.
Travel Tips (just a few)
1. Take along a plastic hanger so that clothes can be hung in the bathroom to "steam out wrinkles"
2. Use a handbag with a shoulder strap; both hands can then be free.
3. Do not pack valuables such as jewelry, traveler's checks or medicines inside checked luggage.
4. Take a couple plastic bags for laundry, wet clothing and swim suits.
5. If renting a car, get one with a trunk. Put your luggage and valuables in the trunk and lock it.
6. Unpack quickly after your arrival.
7. Enjoy yourself! Happy carefree traveling!

those are hilarious and so silly because they are such common sense, maybe we're just smarter these days!
Love it! Can't wait to hear more of your useful information!!!!
thanks for sharing Bonnie. I love stuff like that
"carefree traveling?" Things sure have changed in the last 24 years, if only packing could be that simple!
Can't wait to see what else you've got from that book...
Sure its 1984, but not much has changed! Those are great tips (I may travel a lot, but I always need new tips and reminders!). And I LOVE German pancakes. We totally had those growing up... come to think of it my Mom must have had the same book!
Oh my gosh, you are so funny! I think the a-z tips are the best! HA HA!
